The Safer Choice Program was developed by the EPA to make it easier for consumers to find cleaning and other products that are safer for their families and the environment. The Safer Choice label helps consumers and commercial buyers identify products that provide safer chemical ingredients, without sacrificing quality or performance.
More than 2,000 products currently qualify to carry the Safer Choice label. This label provides assurance that the products are safer for:
- People and pets
- Workers' health
- Fish, animals, and the environment
Regardless of percentage, every chemical ingredient in a Safer Choice-labeled product is evaluated through EPA’s rigorous scientific process, and only the safest ingredients are allowed. To be eligible for the label, a product must comply with the Safer Choice Standard, which includes very stringent human health and environmental criteria. The Standard also incorporates safer chemical criteria for individual component class ingredients. In addition to meeting strict safety criteria, every product that earns the Safer Choice label also has to meet high standards for category-specific performance, and perform comparably to conventional product standards.
